Doctor Who- Season 8 Episode 1 – Deep Breath

Doctorwho Fandom

Sit back this is going to be a long one…

I’m still on mixed reviews on this episode. Peter Capladi I expected him to make a brilliant Doctor. I was worried about his and Clara’s relationship. Moffat constantly put to viewers that her and the 11th Doctor, a young attractive guy had a deeper connection, than just a usual companion relationship. Since New Doctor Who started we have gone through 3 young Doctor’s each attractive, so now it was time to see how much the writers were going to make the age issue blow up in everyones faces.

At times the episode was like this-

Doctor who3

First let’s start with the issue that might have me clawing my eyes out… that new opening sequence. Doctor Who has been running for 50 years… WHY ARE YOU SCREWING THE CLASSIC??? If you had to change the imagery whyyyyy did you have to change the theme song?? Also how many times do you need to change the interior of the Tardis???

When the Doctor first walks outDoctor Who door of the Tardis, I’ll admit at first I was sort of offended as it seemed like Moffat was trying to make it seem like the Doctor had some sort of mental health problem on first viewing some parts seemed seriously over written. At times I was laughing because I related to some of the stuff he was saying and doing, that whole over the place, don’t want to sleep,, no real idea what they are saying or doing, or what anyone else thinks… It’s like me in a Manic state! Hey I’ll probably understand Dinosaur too… and I have climbed out of windows.

I’m interested to see what the Doctor will be like once he’s found out who he is. We saw it with the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) when he regenerated when he woke up after having a rough regeneration he had a few issues figuring out who he was, but mostly concerned with the fact he wasn’t ginger. With the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) he seemed to adapt into his new character and form with ease. In this episode like the 10th Doctor was the opposite of the 9th Doctors (Christopher Eccleston) regeneration (as we didn’t actually see any problems with his physical regeneration) the 12th is the opposite of the 11th. The 11th had no mental problems with his regeneration and the 12th seems loaded with them. Even between the moments 12th is figuring out who he is we are getting the picture that 12th is a darker character and compared to the 11th he is a less warm, straight to the point character. There are moments especially when he leaves Clara in danger of the robots where I questioned his emotions, in the past we wouldn’t have seen the Doctor put his companion in harms way. However, we won’t see till later if this is a permanent part of him or if it’s just the regeneration. Although one major question is, Are the Doctor’s running days over? As in this episode we saw less running and more of the Doctor tackling the danger head on.

We get to the scene where we meet this episodes main villain. Clockwork robot thing which is taking out organs, which we later find out he is using the parts to repair his army and his ship… Umm seems familiar… Doctor who4

Well no one can argue with Moffat for stealing anyone else’s idea. Considering that Series 2 episode which involved Clockwork droids, who were stealing organs to get their ship working, and Madame De Pompadour. For a episode one in the new series though I was hoping for something a bit more original than Moffat recycling his other ideas.

It does get confirmed in the episode that these two episodes are interlinked only the ship which is mentioned in this episode is the Madam De Pompadour’s sister ship, Marie Antoinette.

We have a scene where some of my favourite characters, Madame Vastra and Jenny, it finally gets said they are married! Yay! At least this episode shows off a lesbian relationship, however, there is a kissing scene between them but they weren’t kissing in a moment in love they were kissing because Madame Vastra could store oxygen and they needed to hold her breath. Sweet that Madame Vastra was practically saving Jenny’s life, not so sweet that the only scene with them kissing was because they had to.   Vastra has a bitch fight with Clara, on if she is judgemental. This is where it really gets down to business on if Clara is bothered about the Doctor being an, “older,” person. Turns out she isn’t… All this is happening while the Doctor is running on the rooftops talking to the dinosaur…

THEN THEY KILL THE FREAKING DINOSAUR!!!

We have another cDoctor Who scaredonnection to a past episode, this time series 1 of the New Doctor Who, where the pig in a spaceship flies into Big ben… This time we have a dinosaur being burned to death near Big Ben. In both cases the Doctor, in grief, says, “It/She was scared.” Putting forward this idea that he’s sad that the Human Race doesn’t know how to distinguish between a threat and fear.

Moffat’s connection to Sherlock then comes out, as the Dinosaur’s death (the Dinosaur has basically combusted) then becomes a murder mystery as the question is, “Have their been any similar murders?” Turns out there has. The Doctor disappears leaving Clara questioning him again.Doctor who hit

Since New Doctor Who Started in 2006, only Rose has seen the Doctor regenerate and continued to be his companion. Compared to her, Clara has more doubt about who the Doctor is. This idea of accepting age comes back, although I know Rose and Clara are completely different characters, but if you think about it like this. Rose saw 9th Doctor change into a physically younger looking 10th Doctor, there was that romantic attraction there and in some cases the 10th Doctors attitude was more upbeat and positive- it was mentioned the 9th Doctor was still getting over the war. Here Clara has to sort of accept the opposite, accepting her young, childish Doctor has turned into an older Doctor, who on first appearances seems unstable. There’s a hurtful (for viewers) part where the 11th Doctor phones Clara up from Trenzalore in the past (Timey wimey Wibbly wobbly stuff) mentioning the version she is with now, will be scared and need help, that plus the 12th Doctor asking Clara if she wants to go for chips, connects back to the first series. There is the possibility that The Doctor needs Clara to be Rose, as he mentioned before at the end of series 4, Rose made him better. Where as the 10th Doctor and the 11th Doctor has similarities I’m thinking the 12th Doctor and the 9th Doctor are going to have similarities, winding the series down a darker path.

Mentioning Donna.  There is a scene where the Doctor, confused with who he is, Questioning an old poor man “Have you seen this face before?… It’s funny because I’m sure that I have.” One problem I saw with Peter Capaldi being the new Doctor was that he HAS been in Doctor Who before.

Doctor+Who Face

Series 4- Fires of Pompeii which is one of the first places The 10th Doctor takes Donna. It’s a long shot but another theory could be is we have a connection to Donna here.Like Rose, Donna also had the attitude to tell the Doctor when to stop and had the plus that she wasn’t crushing on the Doctor all the time.

Also if we are connecting the Doctor back to Pompeii it could mean that the Doctor might not just have some control on what he looks like, it get’s mentioned he chose to look youthful to fit in, but who he looks like.

I mentioned before that the Doctor put Clara in a situation where she was in danger- leaving her trapped with the clockwork droids, the only thing that properly saved Clara was the fact she remembered the Doctor telling her, “How long can you hold your breath?” As these droids seem to be able to sense any human because of their breathing, although in the end Clara was still caught because let’s admit it we need oxygen to live. It still shows that the Doctor is willing to take more risks and maybe in future episodes the companion isn’t going to be safeguarded and locked up in the Tardis sent home every so often. This placing Clara, in danger also is a trust test. Although the Doctor left her, she had to see that he would always, “Have her back.” It’s different to see that instead of the Doctor insulting just the robots/villains, but he also throws an insult at Clara, “5’1 and crying.” and calling her a, “Control freak.”

There is also something I’ve actually become annoyed about. The Doctor’s change of attitude and the fact we will be getting a male companion, has Moffat put this characteristic in the Doctor to fit in with the male companion? Also this new quality might give a theory that Clara’s exit from the show might not be a clean one.

THE PHONE CALL

Doctorwho waaaa

I cried and I will keep crying for possibly the next 10 times I watch this episode. I know the Doctor is now not a, “Hugging person,” but I believe most of the Whovian fandom was giving him a hug at that point.

Questions (weirdly both of these questions the answer River has crossed my mind but then I’ve had to dismiss it)-

Who is this woman who is trying to keep them together? I always thought, “The Woman at the Shop.” was River, but if you remember Clara has met River so hopefully she would have mentioned when the Doctor asked who gave you my number that it was River.

Missy

Who is Missy?

Right I have been asked if this could be River Song, due to her calling the Doctor her, “Boyfriend.”

*Sigh*
*turns lights off*
*sets up projector*
*opens powerpoint*
allow me to tell you a thing

At the moment looking at the past story lines there is only a slim chance Missy is River Song. We met River Song as Mel, when she was a child growing up with Amy and Rory. We saw her grow up then change into the River Song we all know. She can’t regenerate, meaning River can’t change, as she gave her regeneration energy to save the Doctor. Also the small fact River is now dead and stuck in a library database, so even if she could change she’s stuck anyway. What about before Mel changed into River Song? Ok we find Melody again as a child in 1969 where she regenerates. If Missy is Melody, this would mean she regenerated, grew up, went back to the Victorian era, did whatever she is there for, then regenerated again into Mel to go back to school with Amy and Rory in I’m guessing the 1980’s/1990’s.

There is also another theory- Tumblr- that Missy could be the Master. Missy- Mistress- Master.

But from what I’ve seen with Moffat’s writing anything could happen.

– One thing about the Missy scene. This is either connected or the Doctor Who team really need to find new locations

Doctor who 2 Doctor Who 1 Garden 3

We have seen that garden in Series 6, The Girl Who Waited, Where Amy is quarantined in a place which is almost described as, “Kindness centres.” which allow people to live out the rest of their lives in the best way possible. It could be the same place- planet Apalapucia- Missy says it’s the, “Promise Land. Paradise.”

We’ve also seen it in a Sarah Jane Adventure episode where the gang go investigate a, “Haunted,” Building, only to find out it was the work of an alien magician.

Other

Coolest entrance goes to Madame Vastra and Jenny, I know the Tardis entering via a dinosaur was cool but I have more chance of being able to do aerial acrobatics… although chances are I’ll just end up killing myself and fall like Strax did.

Favourite quotes-

Doctor. “Planet of the pudding brains.”

Strax- “By bringing it (the Tardis) here, he’ll be lured from the dangers of London to this place of safety… And we will melt him with acid.”

Clara- “Okay that last part,”

Strax- “And we will not. Melt him with acid.”

Doctor- “I’m Scottish, I can complain about things.”

Doctor “I don’t know but I’d probably blame the English.”

Doctor- “I don’t think I’m a hugging person now”

Clara- “I’m not sure you get a vote.”

Doctor Who, Christmas episode review.

Ok, this is a bit late. This episode was aired in 2013 and we are now in 2014, truthfully I’ve been in Pantoland, since the 20th of December on stage.

DWC1

Now, this episode can be awarded some sort of trophy for truly screwing up the Doctor Who counting system.

Those who know, since 1963 to 24th of December 2013 we knew Time Lord- Doctor Who regeneration rule being there are 12 regenerations, and there will be 13 Doctors. And the Doctor and their actors are as follows
1st Doctor- William Hartnell
2nd- Patrick Troughton
3rd- Jon Pertwee
4th- Tom Baker
5th- Peter Davison
6th- Colin Baker
7th- Sylvester McCoy
8th- Paul McGann
9th- Christopher Eccleston
10th- David Tennant
11th- Matt Smith
12th Peter Capaldi.

After the 50th anniversary episode, there was the question, with no official answer at the time if John Hurt, who was introduced as, “The War Doctor,” Should actually be the 9th Doctor, meaning the current Doctor- Peter Capaldi would be the last. Although, with that episode bringing Gallifrey back, there was the option that the Time Lords would grant the Doctor more regenerations. One snag is that The Doctor doesn’t know where his home planet is, basically depending on how difficult the writers make it, finding Gallifrey could be really easy or it could be like getting a Where’s Wally book, only to make things extremely difficult someone has torn the pages up and hidden the small picture of Wally in some giant mansion sort of house with a garden with no clue to where the picture is.

Back to the Christmas episode, the line up was changed even more. Back when David Tennant was the Doctor , viewers did see regeneration energy- he was shot by a Dalek

Zim shaking headOnly after healing himself, he poured that energy into his hand that cut off, (Not going to go into that, Whovians you should know what I’m talking about, those who don’t you need to go watch the Christmas Special at the start of series 2). I don’t know anyone who actually counted that as a regeneration, but 25th December 2013 it actually got announced that it was a regeneration and the Doctor at the time had, “Vanity,” Issues.

Basically the line up now looks like

8th- Paul McGann
9th- John Hurt
10th- Christopher Eccleston
11th- David Tennant
12th- David Tennant
13th- Matt Smith
14th- Peter Capaldi

spock

Now, I’m going to try and not go into a written rant about this. The more annoying thing about this is- despite the obvious there shouldn’t be more than 13 Doctors or they should have made a bigger deal with the Time Lords giving him another regeneration rather than just some gold light coming out of the crack in the sky, the same crack we thought had been resolved in early Matt Smith days! Although it was written in the script, I’m taking that from the fact it came from the Actors mouths in the episode, which confirmed that the Doctor Who team were screwing everything up or someone along the lines for got how to count, internet sources such as the BBC and Wikipedia (ok I know that one isn’t a reliable one but come on, everyone goes to it), still count Capaldi as the 12th Doctor.

The Christmas Episode 2013, The Time of the Doctor, saw us say a tearful farewell to Matt

Smith as the 11th/13th Doctor, since the excitement of the 50th anniversary was over the number one question at the back of most Whovian’s minds- although most would not want to think of it- was, how would he be killed and would his goodbye create as much flooding as David Tennant’s Farewell as he with teary eyes, left us with the heart scarring words, “I Don’t want to Go.”

DWC7

Like the finale of 2 previous seasons (5 &6) We see for the 3rd time and I get an itching feeling Moffat mightlike writing scenes that involve all of the Doctors enemies in one place, ok it is effective considering we knew the Doctor would be killed in this episode it didn’t give any answers to how. There was a giggle worthy moment in this episode when it occurred to me, Matt Smith’s Doctor could be the first one to die naked- Spoilers 😉

In this Episode, we finally get to know how the Silence was formed and why it is known as a, “Religion.” It was created by the church and the Mother Superior Tasha Lem to stop the Doctor from speaking his name and letting the Time Lords back into that universe. Confusion was also stopped, these events happened after River Song but thankfully one question whichis answered is how the Silence got brought back in time. Apparently, a division of the Church broke off and went back in time to stop the Doctor from ever getting to Trenzalore.

Of course, the Doctor didn’t really die as much as he thought he would, counting up that he was the 13th Doctor he began to slowly die (not mentioning how) Spoilers ;). The Doctor is allowed another regeneration from the Time Lords, using his regeneration energy he is able to destroy the Daleks and defend Trenzalore. Yay! This actually isn’t as good as it seems if you remember the plot line for series 7, if you can recall that series is based around the Doctor dying on Trenzalore, it’s the reason Clara gets splintered into

DW8 Time and the Doctor goes to find her. If the Doctor doesn’t die on Trenzalore (it cannot be argued that he could still die there as Clara has no idea who the Capaldi regeneration is and she has seen every one), his grave isn’t on Trenzalore therefore, the events of that time with the Great Intelligence (End of series 7) doesn’t happen, leaving giant plot holes, and making series 7 irrelevant.

.The Goodbye Matt Smith gives is a tearful one. Where as David Tennant made us all fall in tears with words, Matt Smith gave us tears with actions,

Dalek emotional we are taken for a trip down memory lane with the placement on the set of Fish Fingers and Custard, Mini Amy Pond and the appearance of grown up Amy (First time I saw this episode I knew straight away her ginger hair was a wig, after that though the emotional turmoil makes it less relevant) calling him by her childhood name for him “Raggedy Man.”and the symbolic meaning of him taking off the, “Cool,” Bow tie was like him stripping off his identity.

“I will always remember when the Doctor was me.” The Line that sent shivers down my back.

Dalek

This episode also, brings the quickest regeneration in the history of Who, but Capaldi and his new Kidneys and his Scottish accent make a brief appearance and we have to wait for series 8 now, which is set to be a good one as the 14th Doctor announces he doesn’t know how to fly the TARDIS.

DWC6

Unanswered questions in this episode-

How did the telephone get disconnected from the console unit? (Ok I think that one could go on without being answered but really I want to know, I hate to think it just, “Happened,” For that episode for laughs.”

DW3

Where Can I get a Friendly Cyberman head? (Ok that’s probably more of an outside the episode, aimed at merchandising thing)

Will there be doing a Cooking with TARDIS cookbook? (Again merchandise)

Why do you have to go to church naked? (I want an actual reason for this. It can’t just be a, “Respect,” Reason).

In this episode, something is sort of spoiled. The Silence Monsters, we all got taught to fear- when we could DWC2see and remember them anyway, turned out to be priests…  Which begs the question is this a different branch of the Silence family? One side are priests that ask for confessions the other helps raise psychopaths? If that is true, Moffat needs to start writing some sort of Eastenders Soap with the Silence in the middle… or maybe he already has, no one can remember it.

The Mother Superior says, “You’re not taking any technology down there,” She means the TARDIS key, but nothing is asked of the Doctor Sonic Screwdriver. (I’m guessing he might still have had it on him as we don’t see him pick it up in the scenes in the TARDIS). Where is the Sonic Screwdriver? Or Why didn’t she ask for it?

Is some certain facts with what happened on the Day, The Master, The Doctor and the Power Mad Time Lords met gone from the Doctor’s memory? The Doctor said, “They will come in peace.” If you remember that episode properly do you really want to bet 100% on it?

How does a Wooden Cyberman work? Come on the thing shoots fire! (I don’t mean that as a question, I know the world of Doctor Who can defy the rules of physics)

How did Clara survive going though Time Vortex and Space without a shell? There is an argument if it will kill you or not, when Jack Harkness clung onto the TARDIS last time he died, although because he can’t really die, he came back. Clara was stuck in the Time Vortex for 300 years.

Does the Doctor get another set of regenerations (Meaning 12 more) Or is this just a one time, one generation   deal?

The 12th Doctor?

To all of us Whovians (Doctor Who fans if you aren’t familiar with the lingo), we received some bad news at the weekend.

Yes.

Our Beloved Matt Smith, who has played the 11th Doctor (The Master of the Bow Tie) since 2010 when dreadfully the 10th Doctor got ripped out of our sights after a radiation sacrifice, is leaving the role of Doctor Who.

Doctor-Who-Matt-Smith

Now it’s only been 2/3 days and speculation has already started on who is going to be the 12th Doctor. It’s not really a role that can be taken lightly, considering Doctor Who has a HUGE fan base (well it has been going since the 60’s). People of all ages love it, but the Doctor only has 13 lives. It’s not like a one time role where one person plays this character and when they die it is over with. Neither is it like, he can live forever- although you never know something could happen. Each person who plays the role of the Doctor needs to bring character and personality to the role, or else they have to answer to the fan base. I’ve mentioned how deadly Twilight fans are in the past, well actually if you put them in a fight, I believe Doctor Who fans would win. But the Actor needs to earn his place, make it seem like he deserves to be counted as one of the Doctors… Example, The 8th Doctor. Some people don’t really believed he deserves to be counted as he was only in one movie, the others have gone for series and series of TV- Unless you count the 9th Doctor… I’m not even touching that issue, he apparently left for personal issues.

Doctor Who111

THESE NAMES ARE WHAT MEDIA HAVE SUGGESTED. NOTHING IS OFFICIAL.

The Bookies favourites to become the 12th Doctor

Doctor Who Rupert GrintRupert Grint. Yes Ron Weasley is rumoured to be the 12th Doctor. I have mixed reviews about this. I love the idea of a ginger Doctor- There is always a line about the Doctor wanting to be ginger. Plus, we all know Rupert can act. If you haven’t seen proof of this, then you either have been living under a rock and not seen any of the Harry Potter films or you haven’t watched them properly. However, the unusual thing about this suggestion is that none of the past Doctor’s have been A-List celebrities. They have been amazing actors, but none of them have really come from a massive fan base in the first place. So, ok it is possible this could happen, he’s good at acting and he’s British. Doctor Who would be like jumping to another fan base… Woah Rupert Grint could take over the world if this happens, create an army out of the masses of Harry Potter and Doctor Who fans. Forget it. LET THIS HAPPEN! Although first he might need to sort out the fangirls who are in love with him to make sure they aren’t fighting against each other while taking over the world.

Russell Tovey. Played George the werewolf in the UK’s version of Being Human, has also been in BBC’s Sherlock (So, has actually worked with Moffat).

Doctor Who Russell-Tovey The thing what I see as against him, is he has been in Doctor Who before. Now, Freema Agyeman had a similar thing, she was in the end of series 2 and died then, but came back series 3 as a different character- the Doctor’s new companion Martha Jones- It turned out the character Freema played at the end of series 2 was Martha’s cousin. Now, that was Russell T. Davis’ world, so Moffatt could possibly try something like that. 99% that wouldn’t work. The Doctor is the last of the Time Lords, so no cousins- Though the question is WHAT HAPPENED TO JENNY??? Or if you want to go back to the 20th century WHAT HAPPENED TO SUSAN?? (This is where most of you who weren’t born in the 1960’s/70’s or haven’t watched Old Who go, “Who’s she?” But this idea of bringing Russell Tovey back wouldn’t work as he was clearly not the Doctor in that episode also the Doctor has rules about crossing over his own timeline. Yes, he’s a good actor, but as he’s already been in Doctor Who, it’s going to take one hell of a story line to explain why he was in a previous one as some other humanoid. They’ve gone down the human doctor route, series 4 with the 10th Doctor, they will be bringing him back for the 50th anniversary episode in November.

-By the way, Susan was a character travelling with the first Doctor, she was also his Granddaughter. I know it’s been hinted in New Who all the Time Lords/the Doctor’s family are dead, but I want an official confirmation.

They are the bookies favourites, Some other names that have been mentioned, some which are possibly really unlikely.

Doctor Who Martin Freeman

Martin Freeman, played Watson in Sherlock, so has and still is working with Moffat so this is a possibility but it depends on hisschedule. I’m not sure when the new series of Doctor Who will start filming but Martin has to get though series 3 of Sherlock and a new Hobbit film. I’m not sure if there is anything else, I’m not bothering to look on IMDB.

Doctor Who richard-ayoade
Richard Ayoade- played Moss in the IT Crowd. Now if this happens… Pretty sure I will love it. I just want to see this happen even if he just does a spoof.

Doctor Who Colin-Morgan

Colin Morgan was Merlin in… Merlin. Also has been in Doctor Who before- series 4- So, we could have a similar problem to Tovey. I would love it though if he did return.

Doctor Who Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston… My Lord and Master. In the world of Marvel, you will know him as Loki. If he is the next Doctor Who, like Rupert, he has a chance of taking over the world. He can merge all the Thor/Avenger/Marvel fans with the Doctor Who ones. Also, Doctor Who might see a rise of female fans… and I will have to watch Doctor Who episodes more than my usual 3 times in 24 hours (Don’t judge me) as the first time I might be too busy staring and giggling over his amazingness.

Benedict Cumberbatch played Sherlock in… Sherlock. Also has been the villain in Star Trek into Darkness (2013). He’s worked with Moffat before so that’s a plus. I cannot even start to describe what else he has in his favour… *daydreaming*

I’ll just leave this here to prove his awesomeness-

Benidict C

There is also speculation that the next Doctor could be female, but to be honest. Those rumours came up when David Tennant (10th Doctor) first announced he was leaving the show, I have a feeling they will also show up when the 12th Doctor is ready to step down. Ok, I’m all for female rights, it will show some equality, the females have always been the companion to the Doctor. On the other hand, I can see why it won’t really be done. Majority of the audience and fans are comfortable with a male Doctor. I think the risk of taking on another male actor is a large one for the crew, you won’t know how the audience will respond till they have seen the first episode. But taking on an actress, to portray the Doctor, signing them on to do a series and taking up a generation cycle, is an even bigger risk. The crew basically have one try to get this right. For any acting job you need the right person. With Doctor Who you need to factor in it’s history and audience as well. It’s not like they have created a new alien for the Doctor to fight off, where they want the audience to feel some negativity. Writers and the rest of the crew need the audience to feel comfortable with this character. Telling someone their favourite hero is now a female may take a while to adjust.
