Angela Lansbury Takes to the stage at Beauty and the Beast 25th Anniversary Showing

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is 25 years old this year. Scary I know. It’s my all time favourite Disney film and it’s one of the first Disney films I can ever remember watching.

piekna-bestia-romantyczne-sceny-75805

To celebrate this big milestone Disney have released a 25th Anniversary special of the film that includes some amazing sounding special features! There is fun facts,  a few recording sessions and commentary from the directors. I’ll definitely be buying it!

Some cinemas in the US have also done special screenings and the lucky audience at the Lincoln Centre, beauty-and-the-beast_79535_5New York got an amazing surprise from none other than Mrs. Potts herself Dame Angela Lansbury! The first time I saw this I smiled the whole way through, I still smile all the way through now. Angela certainly still has the singing voice and she’s still my Mrs. Potts even if the cast has changed for the live action version.

So for your viewing pleasure here’s Dame Angela Lansbury singing the amazingly beautiful Beauty and the Beast from 1991’s Beauty and the Beast. Isn’t she adorable?!

High Society (1956)

60 years ago this week (17th July 1956) an amazing film was released. It’s the type of musical film that will probably always make it onto the greatest musical films and for very good reason. It is, in fact, one of my favourite musicals of all time. This film is High Society.

la-et-celeste-holm-a-life-in-pictures-gallery-003

I’m always shocked by how few people have ever heard of or seen this film because it brings some of the best actors and musicians of Old Hollywood together to portray a retelling of the very famous The Philadelphia Story. Now I’m not saying Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart didn’t do the original justice because they totally rocked the film but when you have the likes of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra together in a script that is funny and musically ingenious you know it’s going to be a film to talk about.

224265256413693233RDl7GbVXcIt’s always been a special film to me because it was Grace Kelly’s last ever film before she married Prince Rainier of Monaco and basically became a fairytale princess. In the film she plays a wealthy soon to be married socialite and yet we see her try to please her family and eventually go back to her ex-husband who she still loves. The film may be a musical comedy but the relationships and emotions involved in the film seem very normal.

The songs themselves tell a story and are very memorable, that’s why we named our blog after a High Society song. The song “Who Want’s to Be a Millionaire?” is sung by Sinatra and Celeste Holm and they make it a funny yet romantic song because they don’t want yachts or other expensive items they just want each other. The funnier thing is Sinatra’s character doesn’t even realise Holm has a crush on him.

You’ll also notice Louis Armstrong in the film with his band and how different his music is to the rest of the film. This brings a freshness because all his songs are fun and make you pay attention.

So what’s not to love? Excellent actors who may not have gotgrace-kelly-bing-crosby-frank-sinatra-high-society-1956 on in real life but have a great relationship on screen (Crosby kept his distance from Sinatra during production) A lovely vocal performance from Kelly and a great scene in French. Great songs and great musical talent to write and perform the songs which means the songs will be remembered more than the films.

Some musicals can become boring or not seem relevant to the time and we find them being consigned to the archives yet High Society as withstood society’s changes. It actually teaches us about love and relationships while reminding us of people’s standing in society and how we need to be our own person. 60 years on it’s still a watchable fun film that you’ll want to watch again and again.

International Women’s Day 2016

tumblr_n25foh6aDg1qc4uvwo1_1280

Ladies and gentlemen! Today is a pretty awesome day for all the sexes. Today is a day where we appreciate women, where we strive for equality, talk feminism, and basically tell the world why ladies are kick ass and why our issues matter. Each IWD has a different focus and this years is to focus on the Planet 50-50 by 2030 which is a United Nations backed scheme to help see women gain better equality and prospects by the Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development comes around in 2030.

56c4be02e74370e73f0f7876e318fa63As you’ve probably seen a lot of the British (and worldwide) press and media organisations are really taking to the subject of today and Twitter and other social networks are all aflutter with you lovely people joining in. We’re seeing the Guardian have a live blog and asking people ‘What does equality mean to you?’ The Independent have a pretty cool 10 ways you can make a difference article that takes into account the likes of donating to rape charities and looking at everyday chores in the household and see who does them most. I really like Google’s doodle for the day and the hashtag they’ve created #OneDayIWill It really gets us involved and they’ve also got some videos of women from all over the world doing things we might not necessarily see as feminine just drilling in what International really means!

We at Well Did You Evah thought we’d try something a bit different. We could talk about equality and feminism till the cows come home. I could tell you how it’s going to take about 118 years for the gender pay gap to become level or how women in some countries still don’t have their basic rights and needs met. I could tell you about how in this country a lot of careers still have a large ratio of male to women staff and don’t get me started on the top jobs.

Parliamentar-seats-graphic

The ratio of women in political power compared to men

After seeing what others have been writing about today we thought we’d stick with actual women who have made a difference, are making a difference or are just so cool we’re proud to have them be the same sex as us. We’re going to pick figures from history, actresses, writers and artists and most definitely throw a few in their who you may not have thought of but we think deserve to be in the mix. This in no way means no one else should be on our list, we’re just picking the ones we shortlisted because to begin with we could have created an entire month.

This will give us a few days worth of posts so, drum roll please, we’d like to introduce you to Well Did You Evah’s Ladies week!

Happy Birthday Blonde Bombshell Jean Harlow

105 years ago the actress Harlean Carpenter was born. She would go on to become the well loved actress Jean Harlow

tumblr_o3g7tjzcuy1thgyhyo1_500

In this stunningly beautiful actresses short life the public saw her rise from the ashes of critically unsuccessful films to staring opposite the greats such as Clark Gable and Spencer Tracey. She had friendships people envied, a career that remained strong when the Depression set in and mega stars like Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford were waning and she can be credited with being the inspiration behind Marilyn Monroe’s trademark hair.

Harlow was known for her catching laugh and versatility to act tumblr_nn27itkJhG1qe4ru4o1_500in any film she wanted to. This made her a much wanted icon in Hollywood and made her the type of woman people wanted to be. She swapped regularly from serious to comedy films and it’s this genre she’s probably best known for.
In her 10 year film career she made 36 films and was mostly recognised on and off the screen for her peroxide blonde hair making her one of the first blonde bombshells to grace the screen. Before this you’ll typically note most of the lead actresses had dark hair.

Of course there was the bad moments, like in any Hollywood stars life. Harlow was married three times, the longest lasting for 2 years. She found the love of her life with William Powell but sadly before they could ever be married she became ill with kidney failure which resulted in her death at the age 0f 26. There are plenty of rumours surrounding her death the most famous being that she died of a result of peroxide poisoning.

All her films are worth watching. She was a great actress that even when ill managed to get the films finished and premiered to great success. Even her last film Saratoga was finished well with body doubles when she died during shooting.

Jean Harlow would be remembered forever for being the blonde bombshell that paved the way for change in Hollywood. She became the first actress to grace the cover of Life magazine and she would always be famous for her grace and poise on and off the screen.

Quite possibly one of the best on screen partnerships ever.

Want to live in a former home of Katharine Hepburn? Well here’s your chance!

Over the weekend I was told the fantastic news that the house that Hepburn lived in when she first moved to Hollywood in 1932 is up for sale. It’s a must have for us die hard fans and it would interest those who have a liking for the supernatural because she supposedly moved out because ghosts took to moving the furniture. That makes a great selling point.

Anyways anything with links to the great actress is well worth a look at and at $7.39 million you could have a piece of history.

Another great actor once lived there too… Frankenstein himself, Boris Karloff, lived here for a while and I’ve read somewhere that he may have planted the roses. I’d love to casually point that out to friends at my garden party.

5376

It’s definitely a lot of money for us mere mortals but with 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms a huge square footage and a massive garden (with swimming pool) I’m sure we can arrange something.

All we’d have to fight about is which Hepburn film to screen first.

Why 2015 will be a spectacular year

2015 is here guys! We’re all probably looking for holidays, short breaks and just nice things to do for the rest of the year to keep us smiling. This year has some great things in store for us Old Hollywood lovers. There’s also some marvellous stuff in store for all film, fashion and art lovers.

To give you a taste we’re going to run down what we’re looking forward to in 2015… Obviously not everything is here yet, some exciting things will pop up later this year.

Film/ Stage

I’m looking forward to Into The Woods. A mash up of fairytales, songs and an all star cast featuring Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp and James Corden the film is sure to be a hit. Anna Kendrick also returns in Pitch Perfect 2 later in the year.

Katharine Hepburn at BFI Southbank are holding a month katharine-hepburn-portrait-001-00n-7xkof this brilliantly talented woman’s work. I was very excited when I found out about this! Films range from The Philadelphia Story and Adam’s Rib to A Woman Rebels and Stage Door with everything in-between. For the full list visit BFI You can also buy tickets here if you really, really need to. I might even see some of you there.

February also brings the Fifty Shades of Grey film which I hear millions of women are super excited for. Based on the book of the same name it features the very wonderful looking Jamie Dornan. With an 18 rating it’s definitely for the adult audiences. Prepare for sexiness, stalking, no romance, kinky fuckery and a very controlling rich man. It’s due out in the UK on 13th February with tickets available now from most cinemas.

Fifty Shades See you now

2015 sees a brilliant treat from director Maria Friedman who is bringing High Society to the London stage. Old Vic is going to be holding this swellegant, elegant party which will be kicking off on 30th April. As of yet no cast as been confirmed, can’t be long to wait though! Tickets are available here

Two films I probably don’t need to mention, but I’ll refresh your memories, are The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. Both look like sure hits this year.

Big Hero 6 is worth a mention for an animated film…

Exhibitions

V&A host a stunning looking exhibition of the late, great Alexander McQueen’s work and creative brilliance. Savage Beauty runs from 14th March to 19th July and will be well worth a visit as it’s the largest collection looking back at McQueen’s work in Europe.

Fans of Audrey Hepburn will be flocking to National Portrait Gallery this summer to see their Portrait of an Icon exhibition. NPG have a range of photographic portraits spanning Hepburn’s life. These include fashion, film and philanthropic based photos from a range of photographers.

TV

There’s probably to much happening with TV shows to mention here but here’s a few that caught my eye and/or I enjoy watching.

Supernatural is celebrating it’s 10th birthday this year. It doesn’t feel like two minutes since we met demon hunter brothers Sam and Dean Winchester. Here’s to many more years on TV hunting demons, saving us from apocalypses, getting trapped in hell and singing and dancing for us.

Police show Blue Bloods reached it’s 100th show on 9th January. No small feat with the way shows get cut and cancelled these days. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic also celebrates it’s 100th episode later this year when season 5 airs.

37871045I’m excited to see Rizzoli & Isles return for Season 6 and Bitten for Season 2. Both are shows based on books so it’ll be interesting to see which direction they go in. A lot has happened in both series that’s nowhere close to the book so we can’t guess what’s going to happen next.

2015 seems to be Marvel’s year. New comics, Age of Ultron film and the premiere of the tv series Agent Carter. This started in US last week and I’m quite impressed with it. I’m so glad Hayley Atwell as stayed on as Agent Peggy Carter and remains kick ass and a true role model to women.

As shows begin others unfortunately end. This year sees Lost Girl end on season 5. I’ll be sad to see this sexy succubus go but I’m glad we get a proper ending especially after the ending we got on season 4. Bo, Kenzie, Lauren and Dyson we’ll miss you guys!

041114lostgirlnews1

We’ll keep you updated throughout the year on these and many more happenings in the world of movies, tv and exhibitions. Until then enjoy the vast array of spectacular big and indie films out this year and keep your eyes peeled for other great ways to pass the hours.

Moonko Christmas Gift Guide

Christmas seems to have come around pretty darn fast this year. I’m already seeing Christmas trees up and hearing Christmas songs at the shops. There’s a vast array of jumpers available for those in the Christmas spirit and it’s getting ridiculous the amount of people who I’ve heard have finished their Christmas shopping. Yep already in November.

It’s sometimes hard finding gifts for loved ones and friends especially when you want something a little different or unique. Independent sellers are a great way to tick all these boxes and you can be happy knowing a lot of hard work and care went into your perfect pressies.

Moonko is one of these brilliant independent sellers. Based in a bright and cheerful shop on Division St, Sheffield you can buy a vast array of wears from many established and up and coming designers. There’s also a lovely website for those to far away from the shop.

Here’s a selection from the store that really caught my eye.

Merchant & Mills Rapid Repair Kit
23uhOybfet7P07EUuaS2FoujkYwThis is a brilliant thing to give as a present because it’s so handy. It holds everything that you might need for those last minute repairs on clothing. I have one and it’s saved me plenty of times when the hems have come down on my trousers. The tin is small and portable and will suit complete novices who need to use it in an emergency up to those who frequently sew. Merchant & Mills are a well known brand in the drapery and tailor world so you can rest assured that the quality is top notch and that you’re giving the best.

Available online and in store for £15

Bonbi Forest Locket

These look stunning! They’re available in silver or gold plated brass and all the artwork is unique. As you can see there’s a nice selection with some more Christmas themed than others. I love how different they are and how quirky the charm on the chain is. All the illustrations are drawn by Lee May Foster-Wilson and have been drawn with love and care. The lockets are a nice enough size to wear everyday or save for best. I’m sure there’ll be a locket with a design to suit everyones style and tastes. Added bonus they come in a little organza bag to make them extra special.

The store has a nice selection in and they’re available in the jewellery section of the website for a great price of £19

Nathalie Bond Handmade Candle and Soap

lqlJxDgUwoRAu2BH988ndBQweuAThis is one of those gifts that your nose will persuade you to buy. The geranium candle smells beautiful and luckily Moonko have it in two sizes. The geranium soap contains rose petals so will leave you feeling pretty and smelling flowery fresh. Both the candle and soap are handmade with natural and organic ingredients so are great for those of us that are sensitive to strong fragrances and nasty ingredients. All Nathalie Bond products are created in Sheffield and I’m sure you’ll be falling in love with the collection soon.

The Handmade Small Candle is £11 and the Handmade soap is £5.

Stoneware Whisky Cup

Everyone needs a wee dram of whisky or a hot toddy during winter so why not have aFRghBNBVy-njFuVLqHPg1yrvNsk proper whisky cup to drink it out of? And if you’re not a whisky fan then use it for the drink of your choice! There is a great range of cups available but these really caught my eye. They’re handmade in Scotland by Tom Butcher so each one is different and has it’s own character. They’ll stand out in any household and be useful to everyone.

Donna Wilson Squirrel Beaker and Tea Towel

9Cwl2VhpILAZpj6tU8RfZ0rUvAg

I love the entire Donna Wilson collection but the squirrels put a big smile on your face. Everyone uses a cup for their morning cuppa so what better gift to send. Tea towels are always useful too especially one that tells you to “Use my tail to dry your dishes.”tvaKLwj3QnUpoCdN2MbqEcjux20 These would be great for students and adults alike. You’ll definitely know who the cup belongs to. The illustrations look great and vibrant and the quality is brilliant with the cup being handmade and printed in Stoke-on-Trent and the tea towel printed there too.

The beaker is available for £15.25 and tea towel for £12.

Hopefully this list will have given you some ideas and steered you towards the independent scene for gifts this christmas. Everything should be available in Moonko’s store and online (subject to availability). Locals can also make use of the click and collect service which coincidentally gives you an excuse to go shopping. Don’t get stressed out in big stores this year and remember to treat yourself!

Happy Birthday Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco!

Actress. Mother. Philanthropist. Style Icon. Princess of Monaco.

0824-28-grace-kelly-400

Today would have been Grace Kelly’s 85th Birthday. She was as famous an actress as she was a Princess and will always be remembered for her fashion choices, very private private life and for her leading roles opposite some very famous leading men. When she gave up acting to marry Prince Rainier of Monaco Hollywood and her fans literally mourned the loss of such an amazing and dedicated actress but we would soon see her as  the perfect Princess. She took all her duties in her stride, put her family first and became world known in her charity work.

We would then mourn her again, when aged 52, she died after a car crash. Many she had worked with throughout her life would attend her funeral including Princess Diana, Cary Grant and James Stewart who read a eulogy.

Grace, you gave us such delicate yet strong performances that showed us what a strong woman you were and what strong women we could be. You’re remembered even today for your fashion style and your beautiful hairstyle. You charmed audiences and the likes of James Stewart, Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra and all the other men you acted opposite. Not many other women retired from acting and had Alfred Hitchcock trying to persuade them back into the business.

We leave you with a humorous clip from Grace’s last ever film, released in 1956, High Society.

York Coffee: The Perky Peacock

York is one of those places that suits everyone. It’s historical, touristy, quirky and studenty all at once. It’s even better for hidden gems of the coffee variety. We’ve become quite the York lovers over the years and added together with our love for coffee, cake and artisan foods we thought it was a no brainer to share our knowledge with you.

IMG_1556

Perky Peacock at Lendal Bridge.

One of our all time favourites is The Perky Peacock. Perky is in two locations, one in the tower at Lendal Bridge (blink and you’ll miss it) and the other on Gillygate very close to York St. John Uni. It’s all ran by the wonderful Nicola Peacock and her fantastic team. Nicola knows all there is to know about the food and coffee they sell and can put together an excellent bacon butty on Via Vecchia’s cheese bread. The coffee comes from Origin Coffee Roasters and no matter who makes your drink the coffee is wonderful. All food products are baked freshly every day and sourced locally which should keep everyone visiting York very happy. If you manage to get to the Lendal Bridge one early enough you’ll find yourself being led there by the smell of bacon.

The team put together a great range of sandwiches everyday and the shop at Gillygate do wonderful warm sandwiches and platters to suit everyone’s tastes. The bread PerkyIMG_1553 uses is an art form by itself, none of this plastic bread or stuff that looks rustic, all the bread is supplied by the guys at Via Vecchia so is artisan to the very core and is literally produced 2 minutes away from both shops on the Shambles. Bluebird Bakery also have some input with their temptingly gooey brownies. Honestly you’ll have to take one home. Both sites are completely different to each other but still a great place to chill out with a lovingly made coffee and a slab of cake. The ranges of cakes they have everyday is amazing and their NobHobs rival the Mcvities version.

In Cat’s uni days Nicola even made porridge with marshmallows along with a hot chocolate with marshmallows. Unforgettable really. If you have a take out drink from Perky take a look at the cup and try not to smile.

Things to most definitely try: Bacon butty on cheese bread and a flat white.

Things to look out for: Any cakes that catch your eye and the awesome tote bags. Help promote Perky Peacock! Oh and watch out for the rising water line when it rains badly at Lendal Bridge.

Well Did You Evah’s Tribute to Lauren Bacall

tumblr_nab36skic01qa1ubyo1_1280

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write one of these for at least another few years but alas Betty Bacall suddenly died of a massive stroke on Tuesday 12th August. We were trying to think of a fitting tribute to the talent, the beauty and the stylishness that was Lauren Bacall and all we could come up with to properly show our love for her was photos and videos.

tumblr_na9bfbgXGY1qabj53o1_1280Bacall was a true legend and not just because of her husband Humphrey Bogart. Her tilted head with smouldering eyes, her sexy husky voice and her beautiful make-up, dress sense and coiffed hair made her a star in her own rights and a role model for up and coming actresses.

Every film she starred in throughout her career shows her elegance and dedication to the role she played. We’ll show you a couple of our favourites.

Bacall’s first film was To Have And Have Not (1944) She was still known as Betty Bacall back then. It would also be her first role opposite Bogart and the film that would change her life. Here we have the famous whistle scene.

Here we have one of my favourite Lauren Bacall films; How To Marry A Millionaire (1953) Bacall stars with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable as three women on the lookout for rich husbands.

We do also love an animated film she voiced. She voiced the Witch of the Waste in the English Version of Howl’s Moving Castle (2004). If you have the time go watch all Bacall’s films. She has the power to change in all her performances and yet still leave you wanting more.

Now I leave you with a trip down memory lane. Enjoy the photos of Lauren Bacall, the actress, the style icon, the old Hollywood legend.
