A Study in Darkness by Emma Jane Holloway

You might be thinking you’ve seen that name on here before. Well you have! As a recap it’s this review  A Study in Silks by Emma Jane Holloway.

I received this book again from Netgalley.

After reading A Study in Silks I was very, very anxious to get my mitts on this one. I needed more Steampunk to keep me sane everyday!

So here we are again. More adventures with Evalina Cooper the niece of the great Sherlock Holmes.

17264584This book was great. It contained mystery, trouble, steampunk and science and more of Evalina’s troubled love life.

Evalina is the character that makes the books run smoothly. She’s not your average Victorian era lady but she fits perfectly into the book has a female in the Steampunk genre. In this book you get reminded that she hasn’t always had a privileged up bringing and this is where the fun begins! We meet Jasper Keating who she works with on the streets of London and this partnership brings about some fun.

The Steam Barons are the main bad guys through this book and Holloway answers questions and problems that were left unsolved in the first book.

All the characters seem to grow and in some ways become more involved in this book. More happens that makes you think a bit more about the surroundings and the outcomes, which is something that has caused Evalina many problems in the past.

Holloway’s writing and scene setting has excelled again. All Steampunk novels have similarities but she seems to set them above the rest. The characters are all Victorian with their magical twists yet still appear believable.

I can’t wait for the next book. I feel I could say more about this book but because it’s still whirring around my head I don’t think I will. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone!

If you like Steampunk books like Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series or even the old masters like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells you should give this series a17264589 try. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

A Study In Ashes (The third book) Is due out at the end of December. Let the count down commence!
