Today, the 23rd August, is a special day. Mr Gene Kelly would have been 101 today! We realise that there’s not much we can tell you that you don’t already know. Singer. Dancer. Director. Actor. All round good guy. Friend to the stars. So what can we do to make his birthday special? Well I scoured my DVD collection, flicked determinedly through all my relevant books and decided to tell you about my top 5 Gene Kelly Musical Dancey moments. Continue reading
Right so I’ve been watching the England women play hockey against the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the EuroHockey Championships (EHC) which is held in Boom, Belgium.
If you were planning on watching the replay over on the BBC STOP READING NOW… Or just carry on. It’s very exciting.
England were up 1-0 after a own goal (yay!) then Eva de Goede scored a superb goal to equalise (I would boo but it was a pretty awesome goal).
The second half saw Sally Walton stretchered off from a very serious, nasty looking foot/ankle injury. She received gas and air and even through TV speakers you could hear her moan in pain. Watching the replay of her fall over from side stepping made everyone watching wince.
The 70 minutes ended at 1-1… So we went to penalties. England and penalties don’t usually mix but the last time we went to penalty shuttles (that’s hockey speak for penalty shot/strike) against the Dutch in 1991 we won. Alex Danson and Helen Richardson scored for us! But the Dutch equalized leaving it 2-2 out of 5. Sudden Death time *dun dun dunnn* All I really need to say is that the Dutch missed and Danson scored. TAKING US THROUGH TO SATURDAY’S FINAL!! Yes we beat the Euro and Olympic champions to get through to the final… ON PENALTIES. Take that football! I screamed a lot but it was very necessary.
I digress slightly. The hero of this match was the superb England goal keeper Maddie Hinch. She’s like Supergirl on the pitch but in protective clothing. Watch a replay. She’s very quick and agile. A force to be reckoned with, I’m just glad she’s on our side.
So on Saturday at 3pm I will be watching the Gold medal match against Germany because, lets face it, it’ll be a great match. Until then my thoughts are with Sally Walton in hoping her injury looked and sounded worse than it was and with our girls for playing brilliantly!
This has to be one of the strangest things I have ended up buying, but yes a few days ago I bought the 1994 cartoon movie, Thumbelina. Now, this movie isn’t Disney, so I don’t expect all of you to go, ohhh it’s that one. But the movie is based upon the story of Thumbelina by Hans Christian Andersen, so, judging by that it possibly could have a dark side.
The movie does involve songs, most of them… well let’s say there is a mouse that sings about death and about ignoring love. There is a song about, following your heart, but that is sang by my opinion one of the more annoying characters. There is a bird, I suspect it to be a pigeon with a French Accent, who I came to believe he could have a GPS system in his chest as the amount of times he said or implied following your heart could get you to where you want to be.
Right, Thumbelina, is a thumb-sized girl/teenager. She has boobs, so, I’m not going to imply she is under 12. I remember watching this movie as a child- although I remember I’ve watched it, I just don’t really remember what happens. It’s probably got me feeling like this-
But then I grew up
If this was a Disney movie, they’d probably adapt it even more. Because Thumbelina doesn’t just become the romantic interest of one Prince! No, three more characters come along!
First there is the Spanish toad, then there is the Beetle, then there is the mole. All after her because of her voice.
The Fairy Prince meets Thumbelina after peeking through her window, after rebelling against his parents, wondering off. Rebelling against his parents, I understand he’s 16, but peeking though her window??? What if she was getting changed rather then just dancing and singing? But Cornelius, without telling Thumbelina his Princely title, does their equivalent of a guy showing up in a high convertible speed car with a stereo. He takes her for a ride on a Bumble Bee while singing. Possibly a good thing that the Bee was riding because if you sing and dance in a car you’ll find yourself in the nearest obstacle.
On this, “First Date,” Is where candidate number two- the toad- sees Thumbelina. We also meet the cliche line of the Prince and Thumbelina are now in love, although they have just met. But hearing Thumbelina’s voice the toad is now in love with her! The Toads big boobed and big pink haired mother, who sort of has some similarity to Nicki Minaj, kidnaps Thumbelina as she sleeps…
We meet the family of Spanish toads/frogs, who I have a hard time understanding when they sing, but apparently they sing for a living.
Thumbelina manages to get away, after being left on a lily pad by the frogs even though one of them is going to marry her, with the help of the Pigeon- Jacquimo, Now, I think this pigeon has a special power. He keeps changing sizes. One moment he is the same size as a book, the next he is rivalling the height of some of the cute bugs and the next he is similar height to a bear’s head.
The Beetle is the next sexual predator to arrive. This guy is frustrating in the fact, he calls himself the, “Judge ofbeautiful women,” And proves to be misogynistic , throughout the movie. Fortunately, this pursuit is only short lived, wanting Thumbelina to perform at the Beetle Ball, he dresses her up… Then all of a sudden she is stripped to her bloomers and top…
Honestly, Hans Christian Anderson also wrote My Little Mermaid, I think he was doing her a favour when she got her to sell her voice compared to this. Beetle calls her ugly after the crowd conclude to it, equalling Thumbelina in tears and proving she has low self confidence.
A Prince sang to you that you are beautiful and you then go an believe someone who is not even the same species as you when he calls you ugly! From this information, I think she is actually enjoying getting hunted down. She just wants the attention!
Hibernation is something that has gone out of the window in this movie. Winter is here, but the pigeon bird, is still flying about and all the animals that should be underground sleeping are still there.
We move to find Thumbelina now housed with a pessimistic mouse, while the Frog and Beetle are now plotting to kidnap the prince for bait
and the prince…
Is stuck in ice.
Now, mouse introduces her to Mole and this is why Feminism was invented. Thumbelina after one song and taking one strangers word that the prince is dead, is now going a head with the wedding!
Meanwhile, the bugs are breaking the laws of physics, slow cooking the prince. In snow, with the Prince popsicle melting on the fire.
It takes Thumbelina, to get to the alter and having hallucinations of the prince for her to finally grow a back bone and announce this is not what she wanted.
In the end she grows wings (No one explained why she didn’t have wings in the first place…) and is happily married to the prince, and Happily ever after (apparently)! So we do get there in the end!
As a kids movie, I applaud it. It does give the whole defenceless girl story line who is rescued by a prince. It was intended for children so, they obviously won’t see the things I have seen.
Overall, it’s a good kids movie, brilliantly drawn and animated and I think the voice actors/actresses fit the characters perfectly.
Big news Vivien Leigh lovers! The V&A Museum in London has been given permission to show items from her personal archives! This fantastic news brings us the joys of some of Ms. Leighs personal affects ranging from letters and dresses … Continue reading
*fans face* Just the fact these books were written by a British Lady and it’s set in London makes things better. It makes me wonder if there are people in Britain like these characters and this is possibly based on them.
Three books in the erotic romance, This Man Trilogy-
1- This Man.
2- Beneath this Man
3- This Man Confessed.
The books tell the story of Interior designer Ava O’Shera and Lord of the Manor, Jesse Ward. Just incase anyone gets the impression, it is set in present day London, Lord of the Manor is a name Ava calls him, but he does own a manor.
Ok, this was my reactions to these three books
Book 1- This Man– Oh… My… God. JESSE WARD FREAKING MARRY ME… Must get Lace underwear. Also there was a moment were the two main characters, Jesse and Ava went shopping to Camden (London, UK, Planet Earth, The not so edible Milky Way) and I fell off the sofa laughing recognising that the, “Dance wear,” Shop they had entered was probably one of my favourite shops- Cyberdog. Jesse, Ava, Yes there are people out their who wear that stuff. However, as the book ends my reaction turned more into flooding my local boring town.
Things get rocky between Ava and Jesse.
And women are- possibly first time in this book- encouraged to keep their -Lace- panties on. Jodi, leaves readers pining for the second book… and Jesse. Oh and in my case, I wanted to know about the adventures of Kate (Ava’s room mate) and Margo Jr (Believe it or not, this is not the guy Kate is having a relationship with, Margo Jr is the new pink van for Kate’s cake business)
For more on this book
Book 2- Beneath this Man– …
For this book!
I’m not spoiling anything but this book also put me in the same fan-girling state as the first. Jesse puts himself in a state- Another flood warning, although my town hadn’t recovered from the one the day before- There is a lot of forgiving, in the characters and a lot of heartbreaking in the fictional world Jodi has created and in readers.
Book 3- This Man Confessed– Was recently released- Now Spoiler, but I think Jodi had a genius moment when she thought up, handcuffs should be involved at a certain event… For those who haven’t read this before, handcuffs in sex is sort of done before obvious so it’s not in that situation.
Ava’s mother- “Get those handcuffs off my daughter… Jesse Ward, you try the patience of a Saint! Where’s the key?”
Jesse- “Somewhere you’ll never want to venture, Elizabeth.”
Also, the, “Bad person.” In this series, was someone who had me questioning. And again my town got flooded towards the end of this book… On the other hand, I read some of this book before an interview and got the job, so, for me it’s a lucky book.
Three books later, Fifty Shades of Grey, get out of the top selling Kinky Fuckery (Erotica to you normal people) section
Right I’m trying to decide if I’m going to swear or not. From this book you learn, swearing in front of the Amazing Jesse Ward can have angry and kinky repercussions.
I’ll admit this series is probably not for everyone, Jesse is very controlling and possessive, but in the end I don’t think a romance story can really cover the wants on everyone. It’s not like there isn’t any fight in these books, yes Jesse is possessive of Ava, but she does fight back, she’s not a submissive shy thing. And let’s be honest this is fiction, as much as some people would like, Jesse or someone like him probably will not exist…
The books have their perks and shows over and over and over and over and over…. again why it needs to belong in the erotica section, although I think take all the sex out, you could just put Jesse and his manor in the erotica section and I’d still buy it. For some readers, it doesn’t just include sex. No, it’s not sex. Jesse, has labels for these different kinds of sexual adventures. Jesse, I have to swear now. There is-
- Retribution f*ck
- Apology f*ck
- Making friends f*ck
- Reminder f*ck
- Sense F*ck
- Truth F*ck
- Sleepy Sex
- Celebration Sex
Now, there could be more, there probably is. I just don’t go writing down the different types of sex that happen in these books, if I did the people I live with would be more than worried.
Yeah… we all need a Jesse. Also with Jesse you also get, a countdown, a manor, money, cars, an apartment, Someone who can transport you to, “Central Jesse- Cloud Nine,” super pantie dropping sexiness, a guy with a secretive dark past, and like I’ve said a super possessive guy who will tear up a designer £500 dress in front of you. Oh and with Jesse you also get a continuous ring tone change for your mobile phone!
To go with Jesse, we have Ava, the woman who tells the story- yes this is a first person point of view deal. Ava, is a feisty, well established woman, both career wise and personality. It is though her career as an interior designer she gets to meet Jesse and that is the equation, once you have added an out of this world writer, that gives you, This Man.
I’ve said in the Title that this book was, “Mastered,” By British Author Jodi Ellen Malpas, That’s because I believe this trilogy differs from the others of it’s kind. There are a lot of, ‘woman get’s attracted to rich business man,’ Erotica out there. But it’s not just how Jesse has become a millionaire that differs from the rest- this aspect revolves around the manor and Jesse’s past. Each book provides an emotional roller coaster. There are occasions where your heart may break
Ok, at some points it does seem like Ava and Jesse are constantly arguing at each other or having sex, sometimes both, but there is something in the books that made me not want to put them down.
So, if you’re into Alpha-male, erotic romances, give at least the first one ago
In the past month, possibly longer than that. I’m not entirely sure, I’m just happy this is happening.
I am doing this as part of a mental health pledge http://www.time-to-change.org.uk
The BBC- BBC Three- started a string of programmes highlighting mental health. To anyone who doesn’t know mental health sort of revolves around your mind, such as the way you think, only overall it is a much bigger picture. Think of it, you have a headache, that automatically doesn’t mean you have brain cancer . Like physical illness, anyone can become mentally ill, it’s not just certain people and no one chooses to be, depressed, schizophrenic etc. Again like physical illness no one chooses to have a mental disorder.
There are multiple mental illnesses- to name some, there is Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar, Dissociative Identity Disorder (some may know this as Multiple Personality Disorder) Schizoaffective Disorder, Schizophrenia, Personality Disorders, Sleep Disorders. Well there is a lot.
In these illnesses, one person might not have the same symptoms as another person with that illness. Consider someone with Schizophrenia, now the image what comes with that illness is usually one of a person being crazy, listening to the voices in his or her head. Mental Health Awareness, is here to help people realise the picture is way bigger, for one most people with schizophrenia doesn’t act crazy, what people see in schizophrenia is the worst case scenario. And there are other symptoms other then hearing voices, some could have that and other symptoms, such as delusions or visual hallucinations or might not even hear voices at all.
Also, there are other illnesses where people can have hallucinations and delusions and not be Schizophrenic- So Please. Work on getting a mental health related degree before dishing out the diagnosis and crazy remarks!
Psychosis- When someone experiences Hallucinations and/or Delusions is a symptom that is also seen in disorders such as Bipolar and Schizoaffective. Plus even those under stress can be known to trigger a psychotic break.
Another assumption is that someone with a Mental illness cannot do things like a, “Normal,” Person. Now for you who think that, give a definition on what you think is normal. Plus consider, if you put away all the people with mental health issues, the amount of people on benefits would go up- and come on, majority of the UK population complain about those people who can work but don’t- Putting those with mental health problems in hospital will just cause the same problem, the NHS would have to care for said patients, and I’d like to think the human race have learned their lessons from the experiences patients went through in the first Bethlam, “Bedlam,” Asylum in the 1700’s, in the case of just leave them and experiment.
There are multiple people who have a mental illness who have achieved well in life, Van Gogh and Catherine Zeta Jones both have Bipolar disorder and are known. Everyone is known to suffer from anxiety sometimes, usually phobias are things there to keep the human race alive.
It’s hard to describe to someone who doesn’t experience and feel the way you feel. People can make assumptions, with these people saying over TV what they experience there is some hope that others will understand better. Charities like Mind and also the help the health care provides helps in time of need, underneath we are the same people you all probably know, there is no need to shy away. I think there is something wrong with the people who do distance themselves just because a person has a label/illness.
I’d consider myself lucky in one aspect. Truthfully 2/3 years ago I was diagnosed with Bipolar along with that I also have psychosis, derealisation, depersonalisation (this just means I think on occasions the world isn’t real and I’m not in control of my actions) and more recently I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety- run for the hills if you must with all these things, but I’ve
never pretended to be normal or blend in so it’s not one thing people can put against me. Now, the people I know have all stuck by me, we actually joke about it. People have asked, “What caused it?” Truthfully I put it back to my childhood/adolescence.
But it is hard to explain to others that the Bipolar thing isn’t just as simple as mood swings. Everyone has mood swings, us with Bipolar tend to have more… is Severe the right word? Mood Swings. The way I feel is that when I’m in the Manic (Really Really really happy) side of things I guess I could relate to myself when I’m drunk, it’s not just the mood thing that classes us as bipolar, it’s the actions too. Now this is where patients probably tend to differ. In a manic mood, some bipolar patients can become more chatty, confident, restless, thoughts become racing, it becomes hard to concentrate on one thing. It can become like one of those funny moments when you are having a conversation then all of a sudden you are distracted by a little thing. Some can be known to go on spending sprees. In the depressed side of things, things can start to slow down, self esteem and confidence become low, motivation to do anything gets drained out of you. It becomes hard because these moods can last weeks, it can become a cycle one fortnight you can be ready for doing anything the next the world sucks, life is hardly worth living. There can be a moment of normal mood. My experience of Bipolar, I actually find it hard to identify the normal moods. I started recognising there could be something wrong with my mood around five years ago, it took some years to finally admit the problem- when I nearly lost control due to anger, that’s when I waved the white flag. It also took some years to get a diagnosis. There can be a problem with diagnosing mood disorders in teenage years.
In the end, I have mental health conditions but it doesn’t make me less capable. I’m graduating from university, I have a book published, I consider myself good at art- well I have too having just finished an art degree- I’m happy with who I am plus I have a close group of friends who I wouldn’t loose for the world. The only people who say I’m not capable are the people who judge and possibly still see mental health conditions as this thing where the person is going to end up in a straight jacket in a padded cell. Personal experience at the job centre, I admitted I was bipolar and straight after the woman was suggesting I see the guy who helps people who won’t be able to keep a job. There are mental health charities such as Samaritans, Mind plus health providers who are here to help anyone suffering or who have concerns about mental health. They won’t judge, everyone will probably have an experience of depression or something.
Here’s to Mental Health Awareness and hoping people start to see insanity doesn’t come with with every mental illness!

I have a confession. I have a soft spot for My Little Pony: Friendship is magic. My soft spot is that soft that I buy every cover of the comics every month. Yes. EVERY. SINGLE. COVER. My collection looks fabulous by the way. I have toys of MLP:FiM. I have a t-shirt. My birthday money will probably go on the £75 comic they have on the wall at Forbidden Planet. I’m starting to sound obsessed, which I’m not. It’s just a soft spot. Continue reading
I’ve watched Invader ZIM and Blood Ties and am currently debating whether to put on the new episode of Rizzoli & Isles. Maybe I should.
There is a reason to this blog post. I just feel like making you all less tired so you’ll all stay awake with me. You never know it could work. Yeah right.
Here we go. I like to read and has you know sometimes write about books on here. I use Goodreads everyday and review books on there and was seriously thinking of putting the reviews on here, even if just to post them when me and Cat are busy. Or do I create a different blog just for books? Now my main reason for combing it on here is because we write about the weird and wonderful and the genres of books I read aren’t exactly your mainstream top seller books.
Anyways the reason I’m seriously thinking of these life changing decisions is that I’ve just received the ARC for book 2, Unscrupulous, of The Manhattanites series by Avery Aster. She’s a fantastic author who writes books that are funny, sexy, adventurous and in some strange aspects realistic. So I’m excited to review the book and wanted to really push the book and others out there.
Well that’s my ramblings coming to a dead end. Literally dead… my MacBook is warning theres 3% power left and I can’t find my charger in the dark. I have however found some granola type bars. Might as well get reading.
It won’t surprise me if there are more of these late night style epiphanies/ ramblings in the future. Just a gentle warning.
